The catalyst
The evolution catalyst was Caged Bird.
Inside Edge enters the Caged Bird era with a formidable wall of sound, serious jeans and serious music.
The band write completely new material, with new vocalist Matt in the frontline.
It’s late 1987 and Inside Edge continue full-time with song writing, rehearsals, and live gigs. Inside Edge gain bigger audiences, a strong following and increased press and radio coverage.

Inside Edge book more studio time to record a new demo, Into The Frontline, with vocalist Matt.
The recording session took place at The Shed Studios in Romiley, Stockport with the very able John Slater at the mixing desk.
The demo featured the tracks:
- Deception
- Forever and a Day


sudan appeal
In September 1988 Inside Edge were one of many Manchester bands and artistes who came together in aid of the Sudan Emergency Appeal.
The day long event was held at the magnificent Stockport Town Hall Ballroom and featured some great music and entertainment including:

For Inside Edge the song writing continued apace, benefiting from the the addition of Matt as vocalist, the full-time commitment, and the band’s dedicated rehearsal studio.
Between rehearsals and a heavy gig schedule, Inside Edge find time to fit in another studio session at The Shed Studios.
The theme for the studio session was Caged Bird, and the recording featured the tracks
- Fool’s Game
- Fear
- Who’s To Blame
The Caged Bird release included a limited edition presentation pack featuring a grey marble box, the official Caged Bird band photo, and a bird feather.
The Caged Bird demo was well received and obtained positive press reviews:

To coincide with the release of Caged Bird, Inside Edge commenced on the Caged Bird Tour.
The tour highlights included:
- The Bull & Gate, Kentish Town, London
- The Jericho Tavern, Oxford
- The Boardwalk, Manchester
- Centre Stage in Stockport
- The Witchwood in Ashton Under Lyne
Once again, Inside Edge attracted the attention of press and radio with the Caged Bird Tour.

End of an era
At the end of the Caged Bird Tour, vocalist Matt announced he was leaving Inside Edge.
Matt had cemented his place in the evolution of Inside Edge with a positive and significant contribution to the development of the band’s music.
Inside Edge was still growing, still developing, and still evolving.
Matt’s decision to leave was a setback, but Inside Edge continued its journey.
